James Cagney was one of those legendary stars who had little if any formal acting education. He was a self-described song-and-dance man who thought of acting this way,"There`s not much to say about acting but this. Never settle back on your heels. N…

As an admirer of Johnny Depp as an actor, it has always been interesting to me how little formal acting training he has received. There have been other star-actors who intuitively could perfect their craft without a lot of coaching. Depp says that t…

Oscar

It was pleasing to see THE HURT LOCKER do so well at the Academy Awards. AVATAR certainly had breathrough technology and success going for it. THE HURT LOCKER was said to be an unusual choice given the prevailing politics of Hollywood: a movie about a military EOD Team in Iraq. But, unlike other films about the war in Iraq - it was not PREACHY. There was no talking about whether the Iraq War was right or not like other failed movies about the conflict. It was a straightforward story about how wa… Continue

Spencer Tracey

In his time, Spencer Tracey was generally recognized by his peers as the best and most professioal actor. His formula, according to him,was to be on time, know the lines and not to bump into the other actors. I think his native talent and intelligence allowed him to be real. In other words, you could not tell that he was "acting." Although, he yearned for the days of changing his voice and appearance, he felt that there came a point when the audience expected to see Spencer Tracey.
New projects ar… Continue

Old Blue Eyes

One of the life benefits of having a radio career was the opportunity to meet and interview some of the legends of entertainment. One of those for me was the late Frank Sinatra. I was doing a show called Sinatra & Company on Metromedia's WMMR in Phildelphia when he came into town for a political benefit. We sat down and talked about his music - the arrangements and session stories. He spoke about his movie roles and a bit about his ups and downs. He was a simple yet complex man who revered l… Continue

FL Film Tax Credits

I have finally found a way to use the word "dearth" in a sentence! As in there is a DEARTH of major film and TV production going on here in Florida. Aside from BURN NOTICE, we have no major TV series being done here. Major movies very occasionally come here for a few shots and leave. The reason is that Florida provides practically no monetary incentives. That can be changed with FL House Bill#697 which has been recently submitted by Sen. Precourt. It provides the competitive tax credits that FL… Continue

Julie Newmar - Cat Woman

Back in the days when I was in radio in Northern NY as the Program/Music Director for AM & FM stations AND Morning Drive personality, one of my duties was to interview stars who came in to do summer stock at the Corning Glassworks Theater. To my pleasant surprise, Julie Newmar, who was best known as THE Cat Woman of the original Batman series was one of those stars. She gained her original notoriety as Stupefyin' Jones in the Broadway and movie hit LIL ABNER. Seeing her was enough to underst… Continue
